There are numerous misconceptions regarding people that follow the Wiccan religion varying from somewhat wrong to completely and utterly ridiculous. It is next to impossible to list them all because new ones pop up on a regular basis. The following are some the most common and longstanding fallacies regarding the Wiccan religion that are simply not true.
First and foremost, it is important to know what Wiccans believe. In the simplest of terms, Wicca is a modern day religion that is based on ancient witchcraft traditions. Wiccans do not believe in Satan. They do not believe in the existence of the Devil, who was created by the Christian religion, and therefore cannot worship him or sacrifice to him. Also, it is worth noting that Wiccans do not intend to poison the minds of others against Christianity and they have no intention of overthrowing Christianity.
Another common Wiccan or witchcraft myth is that it is a cult that frequently performs blood sacrifices, most often on animals. Wiccans do not attempt to get nonbelievers to convert and follow them as a leader. Furthermore, one of the basic tenants is “Harm None.” Sacrificing any human or animal would be a complete violation.
Witches and the Wizard of Oz
Myths about witchcraft often revolve around the Wicked Witch of the West from the classic Wizard of Oz. As a result, it is a common misconception that Wiccans are most often hideously looking old women with large warts on their nose. The truth is they are not. With any religion there are very beautiful members and some that don’t quite fit the common mold of pretty. Also, along with this line of thought comes the witchcraft myth that they stir cauldrons, can command clouds of smoke, and have nasally and high pitched voices. Again, not true. For that matter, Wiccans do not cast evil spells on people with the intention of harming them. Wiccans do not fly around on broomsticks either, contrary to popular belief.
One myth that is frequently whispered is that Wiccans practice sex orgies out in the woods. While it is true that there are a few traditions where nudity is used in their ceremonies, it is done very infrequently. In the event that there is a ceremony in which this is done, it is not open to nonmembers and orgies are not engaged in. Along the same lines, Wiccans do not drink blood ever.
To sum it all up, witchcraft myths and legends are quite common, but that does not make them true. Wiccans are normal people. They desire peace, harmony, and a balanced life. They are not to be feared. They are the same as everyone else, but their beliefs are different.
