Different Types of Soulmates

All soulmates are not the same. In Destiny of Souls: New Case Studies of Life Between Lives, Michael Newton makes a good case for the distinctions among different types of soulmates. If you’re not familiar with Michael Newton’s work, he’s a counseling psychologist, hypnotherapist and teacher. During his work as a hypnotherapist, he realized that people not only have memories of previous lifetimes, but they have memories of life between lives.

Through his work, he has become one of the premier experts on life after death and what happens to souls in the spirit world. Destiny of Souls: New Case Studies of Life Between Lives includes many of the case studies and the actual conversations between Newton and his patients as they regressed and talked about what happened on their soul journeys after a physical death.

One of the topics that comes up in Destiny of Souls is the topic of soulmates. As the case studies in the book describe, people often share their lives with the same groups of souls lifetime after lifetime. But, acording to Newton, there are different categories.

Primary Soulmates

Primary soulmates are those that we have the strongest bond with. These are people that often come into our lives as a spouse, best friend, brother, sister or parent. These are the most important relationships that we have in our lives, and according to Newton, “when my subjects describe lives with these souls as their mates most will say their existence is enriched beyond measure.”

Companion Soulmates

Newton says that while primary soulmates are primary partners, companion soulmates are a part of our primary cluster group –an inner circle of souls who are close to us. A group of companion soulmates may start off large, but because souls evolve at different rates, they will typically break off from one another and likely won’t share as many lifetimes or as much time in a particular lifetime together.

Affiliated Souls

These are souls that are part of secondary groups outside of our primary cluster group. We may work with these souls when we have complementary goals, and they may cross our paths in one lifetime or in many. The connection between affiliated souls is not as strong as the connection between primary soulmates or companion soulmates, but it is typically stronger than the connection you would have with the average person you meet on a given day. Affiliated souls may be instrumental to help you learn a particular karmic lesson, as you may be instrumental in helping them to do the same.
