You wake up in a cold sweat from a vivid nightmare about a terrible earthquake. Three days later, you turn on your TV and you see the horrifying scene from your dream playing out on the nightly news. You’re sitting down to eat when an image of your best friend crying flashes in your mind. The next morning your friend calls you to tell you she separated from her husband the night before. If you’ve ever seen things either in your mind’s eye or with your physical eyes before they happened, chances are you are a clairvoyant.
Clairvoyant definition
A clairvoyant is someone who can literally ‘see’ what’s going to happen before it does. Clairvoyance, which means ‘clear seeing,’ is only one of many different psychic abilities but it’s perhaps the one that is most often portrayed in movies and popular culture. Did you ever watch the television show Medium in which Patricia Arquette starred as psychic medium Allison Dubois who helped the police to solve crimes? If you’re familiar with the term ‘second sight,’ it refers to people who see things that have yet to come about.
Clairvoyance is all about vision, but different clairvoyants see different things. Some see people and spirits. Others see symbols. Still others see colors and flashes of light. For some, the visions they get are in their head as if they were imagining them. Some clairvoyants see things with their physical eyes. There is no one, correct way for clairvoyance to present itself. As you can see, the answer to the question ‘what is a clairvoyant’ can encompass many things.
How clairvoyance differs from other psychic abilities
As I said earlier, clairvoyance is simply one of many psychic abilities. You may be a great clairvoyant and terrible at other psychic abilities. Clairvoyance is not my strong suit. I’m more likely to hear things, feel things or know things than I am to see things. For example, I just knew one day that I was dealing with a scammer. On the other hand, someone may be skilled in another psychic ability and have no clairvoyance skills. Here’s how clairvoyance differs from some other common psychic powers.
Clairaudience, or clear hearing, is the ability to access psychic information through sound. Those who are clairaudient literally can hear messages from other realms. Perhaps one’s spirit guides speak to them or they may hear messages from spirits who have crossed over to the other side.
Claircognizance, or clear knowing, is the ability to access psychic information instantaneously. You simply know things. It’s almost like information just pops in your head and you know something is true even though there is no logical evidence proving the fact. When you are claircognizant, you don’t really experience information coming to you. Rather, the information is just there, in your head.
Clairsentience, or clear feeling, is when you feel information psychically. You may have heightened emotions or sense the emotions of others. Empaths are clairsentient as they can feel what’s going on with those who are around them. Those who have clairsentience may also experience psychic ability through physical sensations.
Clairgustance, or clear smelling, is when you access psychic ability through the sense of smell. Some people report smelling certain perfumes or familiar scents when loved ones who have passed away are near. I have a friend who smells cigarette smoke and knows that her mother’s spirit is around her. I think many people who have this skill have medium capabilities. Other signs you may be a medium include seeing faces in things such as trees and furniture.
Signs of clairvoyance
So how can you tell whether you have the gift of clairvoyance? Here are some signs and scenerios that you might experience if you are a clairvoyant.
You have vivid dreams.
Since clairvoyance is all about vision, those who are clairvoyant often dream. In color. Those dreams don’t have to be prophetic, but they’re likely full of action and plenty of detail. (Many clairvoyants are also lucid dreamers.) Once you start to track your dreams, you may realize that they are, in fact, accurate. For example, you may dream about an old friend who you have not seen in years and then a few weeks later, you may run into that friend accidentally at a party. (Some would call that a coincidence, but the more you pay attention to your psychic abilities, the more you’ll realize that nothing, absolutely nothing, is a coincidence.)
If you have trouble remembering your dreams, try this exercise: Set the intention before you go to sleep to remember the important details. Then keep a notebook or recorder near by and write down or voice record what you remember about the dream when you wake up. A dream may seem like it makes no sense at first, but in a couple of days you may realize that you had plenty of insights while you were sleeping.
You have strong visualization skills.
If you’re a daydreamer, you may believe that everyone can easily daydream. But that’s not true at all. In fact I know people who have a hard time visualizing anything. They aren’t good at seeing information; rather they are audio learners or they learn through other methods.
Daydreaming is specifically a visual action and the better you are at it the more likely you have some clairvoyance skills if you’re willing to work on them. In fact, you may find yourself easily drifting into a daydream even when you don’t intend to. If that happens to you, pay close attention to those times when you drift off into your imagination. You may find that you’re actually having a vision, or sneak peek, of something that is about to take place in your life. In other words, your clairvoyance skills may actually show up while you’re sitting there daydreaming.
You see things that others don’t see.
While many clairvoyants see things in their mind’s eye, others literally see things with their eyes that others do not see. I have a friend who is a clairvoyant and she literally sees faces in objects. If you notice things that others don’t see pay attention to what happens whenever those visions appear. The key to working with psychic ability is learning your patterns. Over time, you might notice that you have a certain type of vision whenever something good is about to happen. You might have a different type of vision when a situation arises where you’d benefit from being cautious. As you pay attention to what happens when you have your visions, you’ll begin to understand what they are trying to tell you.
You see colors and symbols.
Clairvoyance works differently for different people. Not everyone sees people or spirits. Some see symbols. There was a time when I would see colors in my mind’s eye when certain people were around. The colors would give me a clue about the person. All of the colors meant different things but one thing that stood out was the color brown. When I would see the color brown in mind’s eye it would let me know that I needed to stay away from the person or at least use caution. Some people see symbols that tell them something about a person or situation. For example, you might see coins in your mind’s eye when you hear about a lucrative opportunity. Or maybe you see a red traffic light in your mind’s eye if you are in danger.
You see things out of the corner of your eyes.
Some clairvoyants notice movement and flashes of light in the corners of their eyes. You might think you see something move from the corner of your eye and you turn to look and there’s nothing there. Sure that can be unsettling, but it’s actually pretty common among some clairvoyants, particularly those who are just beginning to explore their abilities. Sometimes when we focus on something our logical mind tries to make sense of it. However, our rational minds often block us from seeing and experiencing things psychically. When we see things from the corners of our eyes, our clairvoyant skills may be trying to come through.
You may experience headaches and eye issues.
This is a not-so-pleasant side effect that some people have when their clairvoyance skills are strengthening. Now let me first say that I’m no doctor and I am not dispensing medical advice. If you have headaches and eye challenges, go to see your doctor. But if you visit your doctor and he says nothing is wrong your symptoms may have somethig to do with your budding skills as a clairvoyant.
Is clairvoyance hereditary?
One of the most common questions I get is whether psychic ability is hereditary. While there really aren’t any definitive studies that I know of, I think it’s likely possible. Anecdotally I’ve heard many stories of people who say they are psychic and they also have a parent or grandparent who had ‘the gift.’
One reason why it may seem to run in families is because families where it’s common are typically more open to the idea of psychic ability so children grow up thinking it’s normal. Many children are actually psychic but they learn that psychic ability doesn’t make sense or it’s frowned upon. So they shut their abilities down. If you grow up in a house seeing the adults use psychic ability, you are more likely to embrace your own skills and strengthen your own abilities.
I also believe that we are all psychic in some way though some of us have stronger natural abilities than others. Think about an athlete who is great at his sport, such as Michael Jordan. Anyone can learn to play basketball, but it’s fair to say that Michael Jordan had natural ability going for him, as well as skill. If your clairvoyant skills aren’t strong, you may find that you’re more comfortable working with a different psychic ability. But if you want to strengthen your clairvoyance skills, here are a few actions you can take.
Ways to strengthen your clairvoyance
Just as we can practice public speaking and get better, we can practice clairvoyance and get better. Here are some ways to enhance your natural clairvoyance skills.
Meditate.
No matter what psychic ability you’re trying to develop, one of the best things you can do is meditate. The more frequently you meditate, the more psychic you’ll likely become. Seriously. Not only does meditatation help to loosen the grip of the logical mind, but it helps you to become more aware. Often we’re picking up messages and insights from our psychic senses but we don’t realize it because we’re so focused on the chatter in our heads. Meditating helps you to relax, increase your awareness and be more in tune with your natural abilities. Trust me when I say learning to meditate is the best thing you can do to enhance your psychic abilities.
Strengthen the sixth chakra.
Chakras are energy centers that surround our bodies. Every chakra controls different aspects of our life. When they’re blocked, overactive or underactive, things don’t work out optimally in the corresponding aspect of our lives. The sixth chakra, which is located around the third eye controls our clairvoyance abilities. Working with your sixth chakra may help you to experience more success when practicing clairvoyance.
Track and trust your visions.
The best way to increase your psychic ability is to work it and trust it. That means you have to keep track of the visions you get. Remember, earlier I said that you’ll likely notice patterns and symbols. If you don’t track what you get, you won’t recognize those patterns and symbols when they show up. And what’s the point of psychic ability if you don’t use it and make the most of it? Like any skill that you have, if you don’t use it it will just get rusty and eventually you won’t be able to use it as effectively.
Clairvoyance is really a cool skill to have and it can help you in so many ways. Think about it. Who wouldn’t want to get a little spiritual help so that we can make the best decisions and stay on our intended path. By being open to your clairvoyant gifts, you can change your life tremendously.
